With the observations made from several crops over a wide range of salinities, stockings and in different soils RMS syndrome proves to be a critical challenge in shrimp culture. The problem is more in low saline and bore waters when compared to loose water with relatively higher salinity.
The symptoms of RMS includes broken antennae, red color uropods followed by reddish coloration of the entire body and hepatopancreas. White or light yellow color fecal matter has also been observed. Mortality is fairly high during inter-moulting stage. huge quantities of dead shrimps are observed at the aerators even without any symptoms. However reddish colorationof shrimps are observed prior to mortality during sampling. Slow decrease in intake of feed indicates mortality leading to higher F.C.R. as high as1:4 due to very low survival as low as 20 to 30 %. Observations made by us indicate mortality is not always associated with water quality parameters such as ammonia, nitrate or hydrogensulphide. They may increase the rate of mortality. With the present technology the best way to prevent RMS is the usage of organic acids along with probiotics.
