Blue- green algae is also known as cyanobacteria. Blue-green algae or cyanophyta is a phylum of bacteria that obtain their energy through photosynthesis. The name cyanobacteria comes from the
colour of the bacteria. Still water that is clear enough for light penetration, right temperature range (warm) and adequate nutrients (phosphorous and nitrogen) which are soluble in water promote the growth of Blue green algae and can multiply rapidly. When the mass of algae float to the surface, a vivid green ‘bloom’ can appear overnight. Blue-green algae in large numbers or ‘bloom’ can seriously reduce water quality by producing odours, thick scum. Some species of blue-green algae that can produce toxins (zeosmin) which are poisonous to fish and prawn. When algae decompose they may use up oxygen in water and causes stress and could lead to mass mortality.
